The overall shape and size of the intersection will remain the same. While some residents have expressed interest in a larger, full-sized roundabout, this type of upgrade is not possible within current funding and space (right-of-way) constraints. Crash data also supports keeping the existing configuration.

To improve visibility, the longer splitter islands along 1st Street will provide visual cues similar to those created by a larger center island. The center island itself has a rolled curb, allowing larger vehicles with wide turning radii to drive over it when needed.

The current roundabout contributed to a 40% reduction in overall crashes and 79% reduction in injury crashes. Only two reported injury crashes have occurred at this intersection since the roundabout was installed. One was a single vehicle (motorcycle) crash that involved an impaired driver, and the other was a westbound bicyclist that rear ended a vehicle.

Crash data from 2018 to 2020 (prior to installation):

• Average 2.7 total crashes per year, 1.7 injury crashes per year
• 8 of 8 were multi vehicle crashes
• 6,000 vehicles per day on 1st
• 2,000 vehicles per day on Crestone/CR21

Crash data from 2020 to June 2025 (after installation):

• Average 1.6 total crashes per year, 0.4 injury crashes per year
• 2 of 9 were multi vehicle crashes (7 single vehicle crashes)
• 3 of the 9 involved impaired drivers
• 7,500+ vehicles per day on 1st Street
• 2,000 vehicles per day on Crestone/CR21

The project is being funded through the annual Street Maintenance and Rehabilitation Program.
