 Safety Policy and Procedures

Safety is our utmost priority and all staff and volunteers are empowered to create an environment free of hazards and accidents and stop work if a situation appears unsafe.  We are committed to taking appropriate safety precautions and have policies in place to ensure safety and accident prevention. We also work to safeguard volunteers through training, providing appropriate personal protective equipment and establishing procedures that foster protection of health and safety.  We ask that volunteers keep safety in mind and do not put themselves at risk or compromise themselves to accomplish your volunteer tasks.

Reporting Unsafe Practices, Hazards, Accidents and Injuries

Volunteers should report any unsafe work practices or safety hazards encountered on the job (no matter how slight) immediately to your volunteer coordinator. If a volunteer is injured during the volunteer’s service, it is important that the volunteer notify his or her volunteer coordinator immediately and together complete an Incident & Accident Report form.

Liability Protections – Volunteer Accident Medical Program (VAMP)

The City of Loveland’s general liability coverage, with some limitations and exclusions, protects named volunteers registered through CERVIS, OFFERO, or Loveland Police Department from claims resulting from the performance of their activities as volunteers and the scope of their volunteer service for the city.

  • City of Loveland volunteers are not employees and therefore are not eligible for Workers’ Compensation.

  • The City of Loveland carries a limited injury and accident policy to cover volunteers. This coverage is considered in addition to any coverage the volunteer may already have.

  • This policy is only valid when a volunteer is performing activities within the course and scope of City of Loveland volunteer service.

  • For more information on the program contact Risk Management (VAMP) 970-962-3321.

Safety and Security

The City of Loveland is not responsible for lost or stolen personal property. Follow these suggestions to protect valuables:

  • Do not leave purses, wallets or other valuable items unattended.

  • Avoid carrying large sums of money.

  • Desks, lockers and other storage devices may be provided for a volunteer’s convenience, if available.

  • Ask volunteer coordinators if a secure place is needed.

 Volunteer Expectations

View Volunteer Policies

Attendance

Volunteers are expected to perform their duties as scheduled and agreed upon with their volunteer coordinator. Volunteers are an integral part of city programs, and absences affect staff schedules and programs. If a scheduling conflict arises and volunteers are unable to fulfill commitments or are going to be late, please contact the volunteer coordinator a so staffing can be adjusted.

Background Check

The city conducts background checks for all ongoing volunteers through Backgrounds Online.  Additional requirements may be required if a volunteer works with sensitive populations such as youth or seniors, drives a city vehicle, or has access to confidential information, money or valuable items while performing their volunteer duties.  In addition, volunteers with the Loveland Police Department may be subject to additional screening which includes the successful completion of an extensive criminal background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological examination, and drug screen.

Hours

Volunteers are expected to keep accurate records of the time spent volunteering, including days and times. Unless their volunteer coordinator informs them of another process, volunteers are expected to create and manage their online volunteer account and report their total hours via their online account.

Resignation

Please let your volunteer coordinator know if an opportunity is not working for you. In some cases, we may be able to adjust a role to help ensure a better fit.
