Donation Program Frequently Asked Questions

• Why did the City of Loveland launch a donation program?

  This program was created because of community and City Council interest in supporting events and projects impacted by funding reductions.

• Is my donation tax-deductible?

  Yes, donations are tax-deductible. A receipt is issued when you make the donation, and it includes all applicable tax information.

  IRS Publication 526, Charitable Contributions, states that a donation is tax deductible when it is to federal, state, and local governments, if the contribution is solely for public purposes (for example, a gift to reduce the public debt or maintain a public park) and is not intended to benefit a particular individual or group.

• Which city programs or services can I donate to?

  There are two options for the donation program. The July 4 Festival Fund supplements the cost of fireworks, family activities, and logistics for the annual celebration at North Lake Park. The Citywide Fund supports existing public events, beautification projects, and programs that assist residents in need.

• Why can’t donations for the 4th of July event be used to enhance it?

  For 2026, donations to the 4^th of July will be used to offset costs for the planned event. Due to the nature of planning and pre-scheduling event logistics—often up to a year in advance—donations in 2026 will be used to sustain the event and will not be used to add new experiences or expand the scope of the celebration. Additionally, future events are dependent on annual budget approval. 

• Can donations be used for new, unplanned projects?

  Financial support received through the donation program supplements currently planned City programs and efforts, and it is not intended to support new, unplanned, or unfunded projects.

• Can I customize how my donation is used?

  There are no open-ended or custom designation choices available.

• Can a donation be refunded?

  Donations cannot be refunded. If a designated program or event cannot be completed as planned, the City will redirect the funds to a similar purpose that benefits the public and aligns as closely as possible with the original intent. 

• Is there a fee associated with making a donation?

  Donations made through the portal will incur a 2.85% credit card processing fee. To discuss alternative options for donating, please email finance@cityofloveland.org or call 970-962-2677. 

• Are there any alternatives to donating financially?

  If you can’t donate financially, but you still want to contribute to our community, consider volunteering. Volunteers are essential in Loveland to build the community we love. Visit our Volunteer Opportunities webpage for details. 

• Was this program considered during a City Council meeting?

  Information about the program, including the resolution authorizing a pilot program to support select projects, was included as part of the September 16, 2025, City Council meeting.
