Madison Avenue, south of US 34, scheduled for roadwork next week

Post Date:09/02/2025 4:45 p.m.

The City of Loveland’s Street Maintenance and Rehabilitation Program (SMRP) will begin milling and paving operations on Madison Avenue from US 34 to 1st Street starting Monday, Sept. 8. Work is weather-dependent and expected to take about three weeks to complete.

Milling and Paving Operations

Construction will begin on Monday, Sept. 8, with milling off the old asphalt on Madison Avenue from US 34 south to 1st Street. During this initial stage, single-lane closures will be in place and flaggers will be onsite to direct traffic. Typical working hours for the project are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Once milling operations are completed, crews will begin paving the road. Paving operations on Madison Avenue between US 34 and Nickel Drive will take place at night.

Night Work

During night work, scheduled between 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., Madison Avenue will be closed to all traffic. The schedule for nightwork is as follows:

  • Sept. 10 – 11: Milling operations will occur between US 34 and Nickel Drive.
  • Sept. 22 – 23: Paving operations will occur between US 34 and Nickel Drive.

Night work is scheduled to help lessen traffic impacts during the day. Madison Avenue, south of US 34, will only be closed to traffic during the scheduled dates and times above.

New Striping Configuration

As part of the SMRP program, the project will replace on-street parking along the west side of Madison Avenue from 2nd Street to 7th Street with bike lanes. This corridor was identified as a low-stress bike corridor in the Connect Loveland transportation plan. Low-stress bike corridors are intended to provide a family-friendly and comfortable experience for less experienced cyclists. On-street parking will remain available on the east side of Madison Avenue between 2nd and 9th Streets.

Detour Routes

Detour routes will be in place during operations, directing commuters to use Cleveland Avenue, Redwood Drive or Boise Avenue to bypass the construction area. Travelers should expect delays and are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time throughout construction.

About SMRP

The SMRP has two functions – maintaining the City’s major pavement network and concrete repairs. Currently, the SMRP maintains more than 8.8 million square yards of pavement, over 800 miles of curb and cutter, 9,000 pedestrian curb ramps and 700 miles of sidewalk. This equates to nearly 400 miles of public street that must be maintained. This work has earned SMRP the 2023 Best in Colorado Asphalt Pavement Awards Program for sustainability and resurfacing. Project Funding

The SMRP program is funded through TABOR, the Highway User Tax Fund (HUTF), Funding Advancements for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery Act (FASTER) of 2009, and through a street maintenance utility fee collected on the City of Loveland Utility Bill. These funds contribute to the City’s overall street maintenance budget to improve large rehabilitation projects like the Taft Avenue resurfacing.
