Speed limit changes coming to US 34 between Denver Avenue and Rocky Mountain Avenue starting July 28

Post Date:07/24/2025 8:00 a.m.

In partnership with the City of Loveland, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) completed a speed safety study on US 34 in Loveland this past year. The study, finalized in March 2025, recommended lowering the speed limit between Denver Avenue and Rocky Mountain Avenue to improve safety and better reflect current roadway conditions.

Based on the review of crash data, travel speeds, pedestrian and bicycle activity, land use, and roadway geometry, the speed limit will be changed from 55 mph to 50 mph starting Monday, July 28, 2025. Loveland participated in the study by reviewing the data and coordinating sign replacements.

“Speed limits are reviewed and updated when there are significant changes in crash statistics, land use or roadway design,” said City Engineer Nicole Hahn. “This update reflects recent development, changes in travel patterns and the need to enhance safety for all roadway users.”

US 34 is a major state highway that runs through the City of Loveland, stretching from Centerra Parkway to just past Langston Lane. When changes are made to traffic patterns, signage, or speed limits along this corridor, the City of Loveland partners with CDOT to help implement these important updates. The City of Loveland and CDOT work hand-in-hand to support traffic safety concerns, studies and reporting to ensure both organizations are meeting local and state regulations.

Speed limits on US 34 vary depending on several factors, including lane width, access spacing, traffic volumes, and the presence of pedestrians and bicyclists. Areas with fewer access points and wider lanes may support higher speeds, while more developed or active areas may require lower speeds to enhance safety.

Project Funding

CDOT and the City of Loveland maintain a partnership for signage replacements. CDOT funds the replacement of the signs, labor and material costs while the City of Loveland performs the maintenance. In total, the replacement of the signs will cost approximately $1,500.
