This month we will be discussing The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon.
A gripping historical mystery inspired by the true story of Martha Ballard, an 18th-century midwife and diarist. Set in 1789 Maine, the novel follows Martha as she investigates the murder of a man found frozen in the Kennebec River - a case tied to an alleged crime she documented months earlier. In a close-knit, judgmental community, Martha's pursuit of justice places her diary and her relationship at the heart of the scandal. Tense and layered, this novel celebrates a courageous woman who challenged societal norms to uncover the truth.
